The front door knob on the house is sort of getting wore out. I could just buy a new one, and kwikset makes it easy to re-key. But kwikset is cheap and it doesn't have the "emergency egress" feature that the current knob has where even if locked you can still turn the inside knob. The only manufacturer that advertises that is Schlage. So I found a cheap "new in box" schlage on ebay for $20 shipped. Figured to re-key I'd just swap the lock cylinders from the knob. And if that doesn't work, then I could always just swap the little pin tumblers in the lock right?
PXL_20251020_222054275.jpg
And then I realized that Schlage uses their own style of "keyway", so my current key won't even go into the schlage. :tard: Well can't stop me, I'll just swap the actual cylinder with the key way between the two. Well no, can't do that either they are different diameters :cuss:

Spent over an hour trying to figure out if there are schlage cylinders with kwikset key ways, which there are, but not sure if that will fit the knob. I might be able to swap the wore out guts of the old knob with schlage parts. Will try that tomorrow. Looks like the only "right" way to do this is just to get two schlage deadbolts and two schlage door knobs and have them all keyed together. Which if I was employed, would be no problem. But I ain't :(

I love the US really skimpy locks, also known for Anton Chigurh to just use a bolt gun to unlock.

Also the doors are skimpy so that a unfit man can kick them in.

I think my best path forward is to just get a schlage deadbolt to pair with the schlage knob. Then get this custom rekey kit. I can rekey the two locks. Then I can worry about the back door at a later time.

I went ahead and installed the new knob on the front door. I'll just deal with it being keyed different for the mean time. But before I installed it, I realized that rain water can get in between the lock cylinder and knob. And once in the knob, there would be no way out. So I added a drain hole. I improved it :sly:

I got to babysit and usually I just watch YouTube videos while my son craps all over himself. Figured I'd do something different this time so we're going to go walk through a spooky field. You can crap everywhere out here I don't care.

Got a matching deadbolt and the rekey kit. Was hoping that they'd be here by Friday, but looks like mail is already being stupid

This is about one mile, photo through binoculars with a bit of "AI Enhance". Kind of impressive for the distance. Looks like they were replacing the lightning wires on top of the towers as they had those draping everywhere.

And now the local news is reporting "local lineman electrocuted and killed while working 200ft in the air"
So...

Aren't you suppose to turn the electricity off before operating on high power cables? Like doing repair on a toaster but you don't bother to unplug it first.

Smucky, have you tried this on your goats.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Men_W ... e_at_Goats

If you stare on the goats really hard for a few hours, the will just drop dead.

I was thinking instead of staring at the goat, try whacking your wiener in front of it and maybe that is more efficient. Make sure you do it for a few hours so that you have enough information how successful it was. Also try this for several days.
