And then the kids took it over from there. Went from downloading ~200gb a month to over a TB

Funny, the chart also shows when no one was home for a week because we were on that cruise ship

Woke up to my grandpa calling me that his toilet was blasting water everywhere. The water on the block had been shut off for a few minutes or something and that put air in the line. And when he flushed the toilet, the air ended up hammering the toilet valve and blew it apart. So had to go change it. But the shut off valve below the toilet is so old that it doesn't shut off the water. So you have to go out to the yard to use a ball valved inline with the water pipe. But that is so old the handle is rusted off. So you have to use a socket on the nut that held the handle on. But it is now so old that the nut has rusted off so you have to use pliers. But with all the rain the access pit for that is full of water you just have to feel around with your hands. But that didn't really work this time so had to walk out to the road and find the main water meter shut off and use that. And since I had the water off, I took the liberty to go ahead and change out the shut off valve behind the toilet. And so now I think we're good

Unproductive week so far. It started Tuesday, I could have been productive, but I figured since my Disney+ sub ended on Monday, maybe I could download the first 12 seasons or so of The Simpsons since I've gotten into quite a habit of watching them during lunch.
Didn't want to mess with it since I knew it could turn into a time sink, but hey, maybe not.

So grabbed the first 12 seasons and got them downloading, which was like 20GB. Instead of doing other stuff, I couldn't help but to stare at the downloading progress bar
Then I thought I could quickly re-encode them into a lower bit rate using hardware acceleration on my CPU. But since it is such an old show, they were all in wonky resolutions which ended up being a pain using hardware acceleration (the resolution really needs to be divisible by 8 or 16 or you end up with green bars everywhere). Going back and forth with chatGPT looked to provide easy fixes for this but none of them worked.

Figured I'd just use the video files as is but then figured I'd re-encode them in vp9 using regular software encoding and ffmpeg since it would only take 18 hours for the 269 episodes. Except I screwed up the math and it was actually about 90 hours and that is when encoding at 1x speed.
But it was currently going at .3x since vp9 is kind of single threaded. Which would mean 270 hours to re-encode But with some testing, realized I could run 3 ffmpeg processes at a time and each would run at about .3x which all added together is nearly 1x, so back to 90 hours to re-encode.
