Video evidence shown to journalists reveals there was no apparent physical altercation before Karmelo Anthony stabbed Austin Metcalf to death at a school track meet, contradicting initial claims about the killing.
A journalist for DailyMail.comwatched a 40-minute surveillance video from the fateful day.
“The 40-minute surveillance video, recorded from a stationary camera on the opposite side of the football field, captures the 10 minutes leading up to the attack and the desperate efforts by Metcalf’s twin brother and others to save his life before paramedics arrived,” Maryann Martinez explains.
Anthony has maintained that he acted in self-defense, saying “the truth will come out.”
An initial statement by local police said there was a physical altercation between the two teens before the stabbing.
“However, the footage reviewed by the Daily Mail at the Frisco Independent School District’s headquarters shows no obvious physical confrontation between the two prior to the stabbing,” Martinez continues.
“The Daily Mail did not detect anything that indicated chaos was about to ensue.”
Until now, authorities had resisted releasing any footage of the stabbing, which took place at the beginning of April, and events leading up to it.
The journalists who viewed the footage did so under strict conditions: they were only allowed to take handwritten notes and were barred from capturing or republishing clips or stills from the incident.
The local police district says it allowed the footage to be viewed because the students’ identities are not clearly discernible.
The stabbing itself is not visible on camera, but the terrified reaction of students, and the frantic attempts to tend to Metcalf as he lay dying, are.
The Mail notes that, “While other video angles may exist, the surveillance reviewed appears to challenge the self-defense claim, offering little visible evidence that Anthony was in immediate danger before the attack.”
So far, Anthony’s legal representatives have declined to respond to the Mail’s story.
Although Anthony was 17 at the time of the stabbing, he will be charged with murder as an adult; although he will not face the death penalty and he will be eligible for parole.
Despite the charge against him, Anthony was granted bail and allowed to graduate from high school.
His family moved into an expensive rented house in a gated community and amassed over half a million dollars in crowdfunding money, before moving to a secret location after claims their safety was at risk.
