Smoke alarms

Post by Smucky »

So my wife set off the smoke alarm today in the kitchen. Didn't really burn anything but had the oven up high and there was some grease smoking in there or something. The alarm went off, it was just this faint shrill sound. We didn't know what it was at first. Clearly the speaker in the alarm is borked. So pulled it down from the ceiling. Played with it a bit. The "speaker" is housed in plastic that pushed over some soldered spring tabs so that the spring tabs touch the contacts on the bottom of the speaker. Weird design, figured the contacts just needing some cleaning but that didn't really help. Smacking the speaker with the handle of a screwdriver got it singing again. But it quit again after a few seconds. The entire build of the thing is cheap and shoty. So figured I'd just run to the local big box hardware store (Lowes) and grab a new one. Checked online first before leaving for the first alert 9120b model.

Ok, like what is going on here

The cheapest model is a straight battery powered one starting at $15. Next up is the a/c powered one at $25. The a/c powered and interconnected ones start at $27 which is the one I got :finger:

I swear, didn't these things used to be like $3 or something?

F this. Jumped on ebay, found a box of "new" ones with the outside top cover piece missing for $20 and free shipping for 5. Almost grabbed that but then saw a listing for the inside guts only for $9 for 3 with free shipping.

So grabbing that :fu:

Hmm, didn't realize that the standard ionization type is the worst performer :sherlock:
