He continually spends too much time in the shower. I tell him time and time again to make it 7 minutes and give him a timer. Timer goes off, but it apparently means nothing. Yesterday he ran the water for a 4 full minutes before he even got in there. The water was running from 9:10 to 9:27. Pisses me off. Spent a ton of time digging for automated shower timers and stuff. Or even those commercial push button things where you push the button and get a 10 second stream. But really couldn't find anything. I did find the Acqua Tempus to be pretty cool though. But I don't have a good way to mount it. It apparently recharges its batteries via water powered turbine (but that requires 2+gpm of water flow). But also expensive at $300.

I guess I'll just go back old school. Usually around 8:30pm I'm out of my office and digging for a snack. I'll tell him then to jump in the shower, but I'll hold on to the timer and give him 2 minutes, otherwise it will be a stick beating. Pretty sure he doesn't use soap either, so the whole process is a waste either way. Everything he does must be micro-micro managed

Figured I could grab some good deal locally on facebook market place or ebay... But looks like all the stuff that is below $300, even used, is the plastic stuff which the band director doesn't recommend. But that puts you in the wood tier, and wood, well... rots. But even still, you look at $400+ on ebay for the used brand name wooden stuff in basically unknown condition. Seems the normal trap is, buy ebay stuff, then have to take it to a local shop and pay $300-$500 for an "overhaul".

Debated for awhile whether to get a used clarinet from someone on facebook marketplace. It was for the yamaha 450N model, which is sort of the top of the line. Was super sketch about the seller being on the wrong side of town and having a brand new looking $2k clarinet. So went to a local, non-chain, music store. There were several other closer stores but they just seemed to be a front for some instrument rental company nemc.com But once I got there, they just immediately wanted to push rentals on me, which were also from nemc.com
The dude acted like there was no point in buying something used when the rental was a rent to own type of thing. The first option was the yamaha 450n for $40 a month, $2k total price with a 30% discount if I pay in full at any time. What ever that means.
After a bit of haggling, I finally got the guy to admit that there are probably other options for rent other than the expensive wood ones. And after some more paper shuffling and him getting tips for other co-workers, I was in possession of the yamaha 255 plastic version for $30 a month or $1030 paid in full.
So I see now how someone on the wrong side of town got a $2k clarinet on the marketplace. But I still doubt they paid it off, I'd assume it ended up on a credit card that they just abandoned or something.

My AI girlfriend continually told me that clarinet used prices should be in the $200-$600 range. I could find no stores in texas that weren't just directing used sales through nemc. There were some places a few states north that had actual old school web pages and had a clear clarinet section with prices in the 200-600 range.
Kind of starting to feel like I got ripped off. I mean it was never clear whether I was renting a new or used clarinet. That seems to be the catch. A random idea, I guess I could find the cheapest used yamaha clarinet on ebay, then swap that one for my son's rental then mail it back to cancel the rental plan, thus keeping the rental I am not really sure if there are serial numbers on them.

Starting to get sus over my daughter's home school curriculum
She has the option to take an "intro to coding" class. The first few weeks was an intro to "scratch", that lame puzzle type programming "language" debatable whether that is a good way to learn, but that is another story... Anyway, looking at the syllabus, I see there is only a few weeks of the scratch stuff, then it moves on into text book type work and no more coding stuff. So a couple of weeks of scratch programming means you don't really learn much. And then the rest of the class is like this:

The section on "digital logic" starts a brief talk about "binary" and how you can represent any number as 1's and 0's by continually diving the number by two and keeping track of where the reminders land:

I kind of forgot you could calculate it like that, but doing it that way is completely worthless, even weirder that they use the normal exponent rule but they only show it for decimal

All the "lessons" feel like someone just pulled random paragraphs out of random books. Like the digital logic sections starts with one page of binary and then a couple of pages of logic gate symbols, but never really explains what they are or how used

Most of the "lessons" have a clear copyright holder at the bottom of the page, looking that up takes you to the company's linked in page and home page. And oh, there is a careers section. But only for indians of course

There are a couple of project using https://appinventor.mit.edu/ but that basically a "scratch" ui that you deploy to your android phone and call it an "app"

Well we stuck my son in there last year.

He seems to be making better grades but we also realize that they don't actually teach anything or require anything.
Daughter can sit down and do her work and plow right through it. It seems like she's doing fine.

Hmm, started looking at some other subjects. They sent out an email mentioning stuff had been "updated" for the new year. Looks like they re-arranged the web interface and some of the lessons have a copy right of >2020 instead of 2005. Some of the stuff almost looks AI generated. Like "make power point presentation that is actually a video that displays text that also needs to be read out loud"
